"Mercy" Killing?

1. Reflecting on Of Mice and Men
a. Explain George's perspective for what he did to Lennie.

George killed Lennie because he didn't want Lennie to get tortured to death by Curley. Also he wanted Lennie to stop getting in trouble because not only did he make them lose their last job but he also killed an innocent girl and George didn't want anyone else to suffer from Lennie's mistakes. George didn't want to keep on looking after Lennie and if he didn't kill Lennie then who knows how many people he would of hurt.

b. Do you think that was the best thing to do for Lennie?
Yes, I do think that was the best thing to do for Lennie because who knows what kind of trouble or harm he would of brought to other peoples lives. George knew that no matter how hard Lennie tries he would still get in trouble and in the future George might not be able to help Lennie out. George let Lennie die happy and saved him from the hell Curley was going to bring to him.

2. Father in Italy Accused of Murder
a. Using a "quote" to support your response, explain the father's reasons for what he did.
"Late last year, 67-year-old Beppino Englaro, won an intense 10-year legal battle to allow his daughter's feeding tubes to be removed, saying that was her wish." He did it because he didn't want his daughter to live her life like that.

b. Using a "quote" to support your response, explain if that was the best thing to do for the daughter.
"Eluana Englaro, who had been in a vegetative state for 17 years, died Feb. 9 in a clinic in the city of Udine after doctors removed her feeding tubes. She was 38.....his daughter had expressed a preference for dying over being kept alive artificially." This was the best thing to do for his daughter because the daughter said so herself. His daughter didn't want to live a life where she isn't really living.

c. Do you agree or disagree with what the father did? Why?
I agree with what the father did because who would want to live a life where you don't even know what's going on around you. When your alive but you can't even wake up and say hi to your family or friends. I wouldn't want to live as a vegetable because to me that's not living at all. I wouldn't want them to waste their money on something that isn't going to come out with a happy ending.

3. Man Kills Family after Losing his Job
a. Imagine and list things that might have been going through the father's mind as he contemplated his "mercy" killing. (In the article, the father's suicide note gives specific evidence of why he did what he did. Elaborate on it.) Specifically, what could he have been negative or paranoid about?

He must of been thinking what was he going to do to support his family with no money. How will he let his family suffer when they can just rest in peace together. With no job how was he going to give his family food/shelter. He thought his family was going to suffer really bad and he didn't want them to go through with it. He must of been really stressed out and with no other options but to kill himself, but to go that far and kill his entire family is just really harsh.

b. Unfortunately, with America's failing economy, many professionals are losing their jobs. While many do not resort to something as extreme as the man in the article, it does cause stress within families. What are some ways that parents can support children (to succeed in life) that do NOT require money?

One way is to tell them to stay in school and get good grades so when their older they won't have the problems their parents must be going through. Have their parents tell them that it will all get better soon. Start getting close to your children and support them to getting good grades in school.
